Every year, lakhs of candidates sit TNPSC exams for a limited number of Tamil Nadu government posts. Most of them work hard. The ones who get selected usually work to a plan.

This guide gives you that plan in six steps: pick your exam, map the syllabus, build a daily routine, revise on a schedule, practise with mock tests, and use your results to decide what to study next. It works for Group 4, VAO, Group 2 and Group 2A.

Step 1: Choose your target exam

TNPSC runs several recruitment exams, and each has its own eligibility, pattern and syllabus. Preparing for "TNPSC" in general spreads your time too thin.

  • Group 4 and VAO suit candidates with a 10th standard qualification or above. VAO posts are recruited through the Group 4 combined exam, so you prepare for both at once.
  • Group 2 and 2A need a degree and cover a wider, deeper General Studies syllabus.

Check the latest dates on the TNPSC exam calendar and the notifications page, then confirm the details in the official notification on tnpsc.gov.in.

Step 2: Map the syllabus before you open a book

Print the TNPSC syllabus for your exam and break it into topics. Mark each topic as strong, average or weak. This list becomes your study plan and your revision checklist.

Most General Studies questions come from Tamil Nadu State Board (Samacheer Kalvi) textbooks. Start with those rather than buying several guidebooks. For Group 4, give General Tamil serious time: it makes up a large share of the paper and is where many candidates gain or lose the most marks.

Step 3: Build a daily routine you can keep

Consistency matters more than long hours. A routine of 4 to 6 focused hours, kept every day, beats 12 hours on weekends.

A simple daily split:

  • New topic (2 hours): one syllabus topic, studied from the textbook
  • Practice (1 hour): 25 to 50 questions on what you studied
  • Tamil or aptitude (1 hour): a little every day, because these improve with regular practice
  • Current affairs (30 minutes): the day's news, noted in your own words
  • Quick revision (30 minutes): go back over yesterday's notes

Adjust the hours to fit work or college, but keep every block.

Step 4: Revise on a schedule

Most of what you read is forgotten within a week unless you revisit it. Plan revision instead of leaving it to the end.

  • Revise each topic the next day, after one week, and after one month.
  • Keep short notes: key dates, definitions, formulas and facts you keep forgetting.
  • Keep an error notebook of every question you get wrong, with one line on why.

ExamSixer's study package includes a bank of 200+ key definitions and a topic-wise coverage checklist, so you can see at a glance what's left to revise.

Step 5: Practise with mock tests every week

Knowing the syllabus isn't the same as scoring well in a timed exam. Mock tests build speed, accuracy and the stamina to concentrate for three hours.

Start with one full-length mock early as a baseline, then take one every week in the final months. Sit each one in a single, timed session, as you would on exam day. Our guide to using mock tests effectively covers this in detail.

ExamSixer runs a weekly mock exam series that follows the TNPSC pattern: 12 full-length mocks for Group 4 and VAO, and 6 for the Group 2 and 2A prelims. Every question comes with a detailed explanation, in Tamil and English.

Step 6: Let your results decide what to study next

After each mock, look past the total score. Ask three questions:

  1. Which topics did I get wrong because I didn't know them?
  2. Where did I lose marks to speed or careless mistakes?
  3. Which section took longer than it should?

Put the answers into next week's plan. Spend most of your time on weak topics, and keep strong topics fresh with quick revision.

ExamSixer's AI score analysis does this for you. After each test, it shows your weak areas and builds a one-week study plan around them, so you always know what to study next.

Common preparation mistakes

  • Collecting too many books. Master the State Board textbooks first.
  • Skipping Tamil or aptitude. Both carry marks that can be won with daily practice.
  • Studying without testing. You only find your gaps by attempting questions.
  • Ignoring current affairs until the end. A few months of news can't be caught up in a week.
  • Changing plans every week. Give a routine at least a month before judging it.
