A 12-week TNPSC Group 4 study plan with a daily timetable, revision schedule and weekly mock tests, plus how to fit it into the time left before the 10 January 2027 exam.
Three months is enough to prepare for TNPSC Group 4, if you follow a plan and practise every week. This guide gives you a 12-week schedule, a daily timetable and the mistakes to avoid. It also shows how to fit the plan into the time left before the 10 January 2027 exam.
Know the exam first
Group 4 is a single objective paper. There's no interview, so your written score decides your rank.
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | General Tamil (eligibility cum scoring) | 100 | 150 |
| B | General Studies | 75 | 150 (B total) |
| B | Aptitude and Mental Ability | 25 | |
| Total | 200 | 300 |
The exam lasts 3 hours. You must score at least 60 out of 150 in Part A for Part B to be evaluated, and there is no negative marking for wrong answers. Always confirm the details in the official notification on tnpsc.gov.in.
Two things follow from this pattern. General Tamil carries half the marks, so it deserves the most time. And because wrong answers cost nothing, speed and full coverage matter more than caution. See the full Group 4 syllabus and exam details.
The 12-week plan
| Weeks | Focus | By the end you should |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Take a full mock as a baseline, map the syllabus, collect Samacheer Kalvi books | Know your weak and strong areas |
| 1–4 | General Tamil grammar; Indian history, Tamil Nadu history and polity; aptitude basics (percentages, ratios, simplification) | Have covered about 40% of the syllabus |
| 5–8 | Tamil literature and authors; geography, economy, general science, Tamil Nadu development administration; aptitude speed practice | Have covered the full syllabus once |
| 5–8 | One full-length mock every week | Score 50%+ in mocks |
| 9–11 | Revision of all units, current affairs consolidation, two mocks a week | Score 60%+ in mocks consistently |
| 12 | Light revision of short notes and error notebook, one final mock, rest | Walk into the exam calm and rested |
Weeks 1–4: build the foundation
Start with a full-length mock test before you study anything. Your score doesn't matter yet. It shows you where to focus. The free TNPSC mini test is a quick way to start.
Then work through General Tamil grammar every day: இலக்கணம் topics such as பிரித்தெழுதுதல், சந்திப் பிழை and பொருத்துதல். Use the 6th to 10th standard Samacheer Kalvi Tamil books. In General Studies, start with history, Tamil Nadu history and polity, because they carry many questions and build on each other.
Spend 30 minutes a day on aptitude basics: percentages, ratios, simple and compound interest, and simplification.
Weeks 5–8: complete the syllabus
Move to Tamil literature, authors and their works. In General Studies, cover geography, Indian economy, general science, and the Tamil Nadu development administration unit.
From week 5, take one full-length mock every Sunday under exam conditions. Spend Monday analysing it, and add your weak topics to the next week's plan. ExamSixer's weekly mock exam series follows the Group 4 pattern and gives you an AI score analysis and study plan after each test.
Weeks 9–11: revise and test
Stop starting new topics. Revise each unit using your short notes, and go through your error notebook every few days.
Take two mocks a week. Practise your exam-day strategy in each: which part you attempt first, where you should be after each hour, and when to move on from a hard question.
Catch up on current affairs for the last 6 months, focusing on Tamil Nadu government schemes, appointments, awards and national events.
Week 12: final preparation
Keep revision light: short notes, your error notebook and key Tamil grammar rules. Take one last mock early in the week. Practise filling the OMR sheet correctly, including the shading rules in the notification. Sleep well for the last three nights.
A daily timetable
- 2 hours: General Tamil (grammar, then literature)
- 2 hours: General Studies, one unit at a time
- 1 hour: aptitude and mental ability practice
- 30 minutes: current affairs
- 30 minutes: revision of the previous day's notes
If you're working, aim for 3 hours on weekdays and 7 to 8 hours on weekends, and keep the Tamil and aptitude blocks every day.
If the exam is less than 3 months away
For the 10 January 2027 exam, starting in early November leaves about 10 weeks. Compress weeks 1–8 into 6 weeks by covering two GS units a week, keep weeks 9–11 for revision and mocks, and keep the last week for rest and light revision. Don't skip the weekly mocks: they matter more than any single topic.
Common mistakes in a 3-month plan
- Spending too little time on Tamil. It's half the marks and has a minimum qualifying score.
- Reading without testing. You need weekly mocks to know whether your plan is working.
- Too many books. Stick to the Samacheer Kalvi books and one question bank.
- Leaving current affairs to the last week. Do 30 minutes a day from day one.
- Not reviewing mocks. Each mock is only useful if you analyse it. Read our guide to using mock tests effectively.
